PCOS – what it is and how it has affected me.

So I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2013, as you guys already know. Ever since I can remember, my cycles have never been regular and they have always been really long. At the time I never thought anything of it. I went to my doctors so many times to discuss this as I got older, they always fobbed me off with ‘its just your hormones’ turns out it isn’t though! Moral of that story, if you think something is up, keep pestering until they listen!

Right so when I was diagnosed I knew nothing about this syndrome, what it was, what it meant… nothing. So I researched and I still am researching to this day! I always learn new stuff, but I feel as though I have so much knowledge on it now compared to back then, so I thought I would share it with you, for those that may want to learn more.

PCOS is different for everyone, I can only explain what it has done to me and how I have tried to overcome it. My cycles were really irregular, I would go 6 months without a period sometimes. Then when I actually got my period, it was awful!! I also gained a lot of weight. Having PCOS means it can be really easy to gain weight and really difficult to lose it! I had terrible acne and my skin is still far from perfect now at the age of 23, no matter what I do I still have awful skin. It also increases risk of miscarriage as well, so not only does it make it really difficult to get pregnant, but also really difficult to sustain a pregnancy too! How unfair!

I can hear you all asking now, how on earth can she feel so positive with all of those things stacked against her?! Trust me, it has taken such a long time for me to feel this way and I still now have my down days, but that is totally normal! My Cycles started to regulate when I lost 2 and a half stone earlier this year, honestly living of chicken and veg had its bad moments but when I got my cycles to 35 – 40 days I was over the moon! I was ovulating, on my own, regularly and not even that much longer than a ‘normal’ cycle. (I will delve deeper into my diet at a later stage, for those that are interested!) I have also started taking Inositol – this is a supplement that I have read SO MANY great reviews on. It is perfect for ladies struggling with symptoms of PCOS and for the short time I have been taking it, I can really say it is working! My moods are improved, including less crazy mood swings for Mr B to deal with! My skin is clearing up (!!!) slowly, all be it, but still! I can’t comment on the regulation of cycles as I am only on cycle day 8 at this point, but I will defiantly keep you all posted on that one!

The last thing I want to add to this post is about OvuSense. In the near future, I will do a whole post dedicated to OvuSense, and I guarantee by the end of reading it, you will be buying one if you don’t already have one! But just a brief note on the device, it is amazing! It is a monitor that takes your temperature whilst you are sleeping, you connect it up to an app on your phone In the morning and BAM! You have your temperature. Do this every day in your cycle and you will pinpoint the day you ovulate and it is 99% accurate! It was manufactured for ladies with PCOS. Now I have just stated my first full cycle, but already after using it half way through my last, I can tell you I have such insight into my cycle! I have never felt so in control of my fertility, and I have OvuSense to thank for that.

If any of you reading my blog have PCOS and have any questions on anything I have written about, please get in touch and I will be happy to see if I can answer! If you just want to have a chat about your journey, get in contact with me!
